City Commission Approves Santa Fe Showdown as Special Event

On June 3, 2024, the Salina City Commission approved Ordinance No. 24-11206, officially designating the Santa Fe Showdown as a special event and authorizing the consumption of alcoholic liquor within designated barricaded public areas.

Scheduled for Friday, July 26, 2024, the event will take place on North Santa Fe Avenue from Elm Street to just north of Pine Street, running from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The Santa Fe Showdown is a venue for participants and fans of the KKOA Lead Sled car show to gather, view car show vehicles, enjoy music, and have fun.

The event will utilize Calvin's Customs and Hot Rod Repairs parking lot for the stage, porta-potties, and food trucks, and will feature a private party inside Calvin's shop where alcohol will be served, while the public street portion will be BYOB. Although the organizers will not sell alcohol, the ordinance allows the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages within the event's marked boundaries.

This decision follows the 2010 amendment to the Kansas Liquor Control Act, which permits alcohol consumption at special events on public streets and sidewalks. The approval does not have any fiscal impact on the city aside from providing street barricades, and the event has received support from Salina Downtown, Inc.
