At Monday's City Commission meeting, Commissioners considered awarding the bid for Smoky Hill River Greenway Trail Construction Phase 1 in the amount of $270,889.19 with a $13,544.46 (5%) construction contingency for a total project authorization not to exceed $284,433.65 and authorize the City Manager to execute a contract with Ponton Construction, Inc. upon fulfillment of all prerequisites under the bid documents.

BACKGROUND:

The City Commission recently approved a second tree removal contract and an amended and restated agreement with the Friends of the River Foundation for a Public/Private Partnership for the Smoky Hill River Greenway Trail from Ohio Street to the YMCA. The phased Project will provide a shared-use linear park trail connecting Ohio Street and Kenwood Park.

The initial work needed for the project was clearing and grubbing of trees and vegetation along the trail corridor with approximately 2,200 feet being cleared by Salina Tree in January 2022 and March, 2023. This Phase 1 trail construction project will complete the grading, drainage, concrete trail and restoration work for a finished multi-use path.

Bids were opened on Friday, March 14, 2023. The low bidder, Ponton Construction, is a reputable contractor who has provided these types of services within Salina for many years.

FISCAL NOTE:

The City's portion of the Phase 1 Western Segment is $240,000. This amount is proposed to be funded from 2023 Federal Exchange Funds currently available for this work.

The motion was approved 5-0.
