SALINA, KS — Salina311 spoke with Martha Tasker, Director of Utilities for the City of Salina, regarding the significant log jam on the Smoky Hill River and ongoing efforts to address the issue.
According to Tasker, the City has received four quotes from contractors to remove the obstruction using heavy equipment. However, no contract has yet been signed. Once one is in place, the anticipated timeframe for removal is 4 to 6 weeks.
Tasker confirmed that explosives are not being considered as a removal method, citing the proximity of nearby residential properties as a safety concern.
The situation stems from recent storm activity that created widespread debris blockages along waterways in multiple Kansas counties. While the City of Salina continues to assess potential aid, Tasker noted that Saline County Emergency Management Director Mechelle Weis has not received any indication from the state that a federal disaster declaration will be pursued, which would be necessary to unlock public assistance or reimbursements.
Weis does plan to submit a damage assessment report to the state, and a clearer picture of potential state-level involvement may emerge after July 10, when all county assessments are due.
At this time, cost estimates are in the ballpark of $500,000.
Salina311 will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
