Severe winter weather has forced the closure of all state highways in 16 counties across north central Kansas due to low visibility, impassable conditions, and blizzard-like weather, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). Affected counties include Washington, Clay, Geary, Dickinson, Morris, Marion, Chase, McPherson, Saline, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Ottawa, Mitchell, Republic, Cloud, and Jewell.
Part of I-70 in central Kansas is also closed. The westbound lanes are shut down from the eastern edge of Geary County near Junction City to the western Ellsworth County line. Eastbound I-70 is closed from Hays to the eastern Geary County line.
Motorists are urged to avoid travel as the storm continues to intensify, with conditions expected to worsen. KDOT has warned of potential additional closures across the state as crews struggle to manage the deteriorating conditions.
Salina311 spoke with Ashley Perez of KDOT, who reported that crews are facing significant challenges staying on the road to treat highways with salt. Tow truck services are also encountering difficulties traversing the highways, leaving motorists in vulnerable situations.
Residents are advised to monitor updates from KDOT and local authorities for the latest travel information and road conditions. Stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
