Beyond the City Limits
(By Diane Dowell)
"Beyond the City Limits" typically refers to areas outside the defined boundaries of a city (Salina) or urban area. These regions can vary widely in characteristics such as population density, infrastructure, and economic activities compared to urban centers. They often include rural areas, and sometimes wilderness or agricultural zones. Exploring beyond the city limits can provide contrasting perspectives on lifestyle, environment, and community dynamics compared to city life.
LET'S GO on a little road trip around Saline County! 🚗
4th Stop:
ASSARIA, KS
Assaria, Kansas, is a small, charming community located in the heart of Saline County, just 12 miles south of Salina.
Assaria was established in 1875, a period of rapid settlement in Kansas. Today, it retains its small-town appeal with a population of around 428 residents, according to the 2020 census.
The town's history is closely tied to agriculture, which continues to be a significant part of its economy. Wheat, corn, and soybeans are among the main crops grown in the surrounding farmland.
This agricultural heritage is reflected in the community's events and festivals, that brings residents together for fun and fellowship.
Despite its small size, Assaria offers essential amenities like a post office, a general store, and a volunteer fire department.
The post office was established in September 1879, a time when the railroad was being completed, extending from Salina, through Assaria, on to Lindsborg. The railroad was eventually abandoned.
Like many of the area communities, Assaria at one time, had a hotel, two general merchandise stores, a drug store, two grain elevators, a lumber yard, bank, telegraph and express offices and a blacksmith shop. It was incorporated in 1886 as a 3rd class city.
Residents take pride in their town's upkeep and involvement in local activities, fostering a strong sense of community spirit.
The Assaria Lutheran Church, founded in 1870, remains a focal point for religious and community gatherings, highlighting the town's deep-rooted traditions and values.
It was also noted that Assaria, or "God will help", was organized by their church congregation by the early settlers of the area.
Unification of schools impacted the community of Assaria, as it did several of the other communities in Saline County. The schools were closed and today, students attend Southeast of Saline, located just a few miles to the east of town. However, the buildings are being utilized by two businesses: The Renaissance Cafe and Great Plains Mfg.
A visit to Assaria offers a glimpse into the charm and warmth of small-town America. Whether you're exploring its quaint streets, enjoying the local park or engaging with the friendly community members, Assaria provides a serene and inviting atmosphere perfect for a peaceful getaway. It's a place where the pace slows down, allowing visitors to appreciate the simpler things in life. So, if you're looking for a destination that combines rural beauty with a welcoming spirit, Assaria is a delightful choice.
