KWU Baseball completes sweep of Baker taking Friday's doubleheader

Kansas Wesleyan Baseball completed a three-game sweep of the Baker University Wildcats taking both ends of Friday's doubleheader at Sauder Field. The Coyotes won the opener 6-1, and the offense came alive late in a 16-3 win in the night cap.

The Coyotes earned the series win against Baker University with a 6-1 victory in the first game of the double-header after a 4-3 victory against the Wildcats on Thursday night.

The whole series shifted days and the Coyotes traveled to Baldwin City for the two games this  evening due to a heavy forecast of rain on Saturday.

KWU started strong in the first inning, with a homerun from leadoff batter Jacob Williamson. Williamson, who started in right field, went 1-3 in game one.

Pitching for the Coyotes was senior Jarrett Brannen, who had only one earned run with five strikeouts in five innings pitched. Brannen earned his second win of the season after holding the Wildcats to only four hits in five innings. Getting the save for the Coyotes was junior Ritter Steinman, with three strikeouts and one walk in two innings.

Jarrett Gable led the Coyotes with two runners batted in with a solo homer and a single.

Even though the Coyotes were out hit 11-8, KWU managed to complete the sweep of the Wildcats with a 16-3 victory in the second game.

Game two of Friday's doubleheader did not start slow for the Coyotes, with a double from infielder Eric Romero sending third baseman Reece Bishop home for the first run of the game.

Baker didn't respond until the bottom of the fourth with one run, but the Wildcats had given up four more runs to the Coyotes at the top of the same inning.

However, the four runs scored in the fourth wasn't the highest scoring inning for Kansas Wesleyan, as the Coyotes were able to add nine more runs to pad their lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Leadoff batter Jacob Williamson and designated hitter Zach Long led the Coyotes with three RBIs each.

Pitcher Brett Maddock earned his first win of the season in his second start with seven strikeouts in five innings pitched, and reliever Thalen Wright finished the game with one strikeout and zero earned runs in two innings pitched. Kansas Wesleyan's pitchers recorded zero walks during game two.

The Coyotes play next on Feb. 9 against Iowa's Saint Ambrose University to start a four-game series over the weekend at Dean Evans Stadium.
