UPDATE: Driver Leads Police on High-Speed Chase Before Being Apprehended

In an incident on Saturday, June 17 at approximately 3:57 pm, an officer allegedly observed a black Nissan Maxima with an illegal tag. The tag was allegedly found to be registered to a different vehicle, prompting the officer to attempt a traffic stop in the 200 block of W Crawford.

However, the driver of the vehicle allegedly fled the scene. The suspect's car traveled northwest, allegedly reaching speeds of up to 50 mph in a residential area. Concerns for public safety led the officer to terminate the pursuit in the area of South and 11th St.

Right after the pursuit was called off, the vehicle stopped in the 400 block of S 11th St. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Zachariah Humphreys of Salina, allegedly abandoned the car and attempted to escape on foot. However, the officer apprehended Humphreys nearby.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle had a 36-year-old female passenger, who was an acquaintance of Humphreys, as well as two children, a 12-year-old male and an 8-year-old female. The children were the passenger's own. The three had pleaded with Humphreys to stop the car, but their pleas went unanswered.

It was the passenger that eventually led to the vehicle's halt. She managed to retrieve the car key, forcing it to come to a stop.

Zachariah Humphreys now has multiple requested charges, including flee and elude, interference with law enforcement, three counts of kidnapping, two counts of child endangerment, reckless driving, and multiple traffic violations.
