As the Clinical Professor at the Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center, Nelson emphasizes planning ahead to ensure pet safety and comfort during the holiday.
Key Tips for Pet Safety:
- Consult Your Vet: Discuss medication options with your veterinarian in advance, as many clinics will be closed on July 4.
- ID and Microchips: Ensure pets wear collars with ID tags and have updated microchip information for easy tracing if they get lost.
- Indoor Safety: Keep pets indoors to protect them from heat and potential harm from fireworks. Secure them in a crate or room with blinds closed and soothing sounds to reduce anxiety.
- Anxiety Management: Use anxiety wraps, over-the-counter supplements, or prescription medications for pets with noise anxiety. Distract pets with food puzzles and toys.
- Avoid Firework Shows: Leave pets at home during firework displays to avoid stress from noise and crowds.
Hazards Beyond Fireworks:
- Keep dangerous items away: Such as lighters, matches, lighter fluid, glow jewelry, citronella candles, and both lit and unlit fireworks.
- Avoid toxic substances: Don’t apply insect repellents with DEET on pets, and keep them away from harmful foods like chocolate, macadamia nuts, onions, grapes, raisins, and alcohol.
