Theatre Salina is set to kick off its 64th season this Friday, September 6, with a production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. This beloved musical, featuring music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glen Slater, will run through September 29.
Based on Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale, The Little Mermaid tells the enchanting story of Ariel, the daughter of Triton, who dreams of finding happiness and love beyond her underwater world. Ariel is accompanied by her friends—Sebastian the crab, Flounder, and Scuttle the seagull—as she navigates her journey. Along the way, she faces challenges from Ursula the Sea Witch but ultimately finds love with Prince Eric.
Originally opening on Broadway in 2008, where it ran for over 700 performances, The Little Mermaid is making a return to Theatre Salina after a successful run in 2015.
The production features a talented design team, including costume design by Jenn Morris, lighting and sound by J.R. Lidgett, and scenic and projection design by Josh Morris. Maggie Spicer Brown is responsible for the choreography, while Tyler Breneman serves as the musical director. Audiences can expect a visually stunning experience with the theatre’s newest technology in lighting, sound, and projected scenery, along with costumes designed in-house by Jenn Morris.
The cast features Grace Corman (known for her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz) as Ariel, Donovan Johnson as Sebastian, Isiah Boswell as Flounder, and Andrew Graber as Scuttle. Barb Hilt, the head of Theatre at Salina Central High School, takes on the role of Ursula the Sea Witch, with Zander Flener playing Prince Eric, Michael Freeland as King Triton, and Nathan King as Grimsby.
