Supporting Salina's Shelter: Manager Monique Hawley Shares How to Make a Difference

Salina, Kansas - As the Salina Animal Shelter navigates the challenges of breed-specific legislation and strives to maintain its No Kill status, community support is more crucial than ever. Monique Hawley, Animal Services Manager, emphasizes several ways residents can contribute to the shelter's mission and alleviate the current pressures.

Throughout August, the shelter is hosting a "Clear the Shelter" event, offering special prices to encourage adoptions. While specific pricing details are still being finalized, the event aims to find loving homes for as many animals as possible.

In addition to adopting, there are several other ways to support the shelter. Donations of essential items are always needed and greatly appreciated. "We are in need of Kongs for dog enrichment, small blankets, paper towels, and paper bowls," Hawley shared. These items help ensure that the animals are well-cared for and comfortable during their stay at the shelter.

The shelter also faces a unique challenge due to the city's pitbull breed ban. This legislation prevents the adoption of pitbulls within Salina, requiring the shelter to find alternative rescues for these dogs. Despite these obstacles, the shelter remains committed to its No Kill philosophy, ensuring no animals are euthanized due to capacity issues.

"It would relieve some of the pressure as we would be able to adopt out the pit bulls from our shelter. We are not euthanizing pit bulls or other breeds due to the full capacity of the shelter, which would go against the No Kill philosophy," stated Hawley. "We do not know what the future will hold if the ban is lifted but we will continue to strive for our No Kill status. If the ban is not lifted, we will continue to find other rescues to send out pit bulls to."

Reducing the number of stray dogs in the area is another critical aspect of the shelter's mission. Hawley highlights the importance of spaying and neutering pets to prevent unwanted litters and reduce the population of strays. "Spaying and neutering is so important to help reduce litters of puppies and kittens. Microchipping would be a good way to reunite pets with their owners more quickly; also, Air Tags for identification are helpful."

By adopting a pet, donating needed items, or ensuring your pets are spayed, neutered, and microchipped, you can make a significant difference in the lives of animals at the Salina Animal Shelter. Community involvement and support are vital in helping the shelter continue its mission and maintain its No Kill status, ensuring every animal finds a loving home.
