Salina, KS - Culinary interns from South High School are gearing up for a professional experience at the upcoming Feast on the Fe event in downtown Salina. These students will be responsible for plating each course for 200 guests, ensuring that every dish is both visually appealing and delicious. Their role also includes handling the dessert course, a responsibility they earned through their outstanding performance at last year’s event.
In 2023, the interns made a memorable impression with their innovative dessert: coffee ice cream served in a pizzelle bowl, topped with cocoa powder and a chocolate-covered espresso bean. Linda Edson, family and consumer science instructor at South High, recalled the excitement of the students as they worked alongside some of the area’s top chefs. “Students were so excited to explain to the chefs how they wanted their dessert plated,” Edson said. “The chefs were impressed with students’ professionalism and the dessert they created.”
Feast on the Fe is a farm-to-fork fundraising event that provides a unique dining experience. For the South High culinary interns, it offers an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting while developing their culinary skills.
The students’ dedication and talent were recognized at the end of last year’s event when they received a standing ovation from the guests. Salina Public Schools values opportunities like this that allow students to participate in real-life experiences.
