Saline County Sheriff's Office Awarded $314,000 Grant for Body Scanners
The Saline County Sheriff's Office has obtained a $314,000 grant from the Department of Justice COPS Technology and Equipment Program as announced on September 20th, 2023. The grant is aimed at funding the purchase of two Tek84 Intercept body scanners, along with their respective warranties and software programs, for the newly-built Saline County Jail. The Sheriff's Office plans to position the scanners at two key points in the facility. One scanner will be installed in the front lobby, while the other will serve in the jail's Intake Area. Primarily, these body scanners will be utilized by staff to screen both arrestees and inmates upon their arrival at the jail. The technology is designed to detect concealed contraband such as weapons, narcotics, cell phones, or any other illegal items on an individual's person. The Saline County Sheriff's Office has requested that the County Commission accept the grant so as to finance the acquisition of the two Tek84 Intercept body scanners, along with the associated warranties and software programs. As regards its impact on the financial landscape of the county, there will be none on the county's operating budget since the grant falls under the jail construction project budget. This means that, upon the acceptance of the grant, other project costs not related to the body scanners will be catered for. In a unanimous move, the request for the acceptance of the aforementioned grant was approved by the 5-member County Commission.
