Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad Vehicle Totaled During Incident Response

SALINA, Kan. — The Saline County Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad is facing a significant setback following the loss of one of its fleet vehicles during an incident response early last Friday morning.

While assisting the Saline County Sheriff’s Office with traffic control, the Mounted Patrol’s early 2000s Suburban was struck by a civilian vehicle while stationary and directing traffic. Fortunately, no deputies were injured, and the civilian driver sustained only minor injuries. However, the collision resulted in the total loss of the vehicle, a critical resource for the volunteer organization.

The Suburban was integral to the squad's operations, used for towing the Mounted Patrol’s swift water rescue boat, hauling essential equipment, and providing lighting at emergency scenes.

"The loss of our vehicle greatly reduces the ability to respond to incidents without the use of personal vehicles," said Commander Bill Cooke. "We were able to purchase it originally from the proceeds of our annual benefit rodeo and the generous support of the community. We would appreciate any donations toward the replacement of that unit."

A Call for Support

The Saline County Mounted Patrol operates solely through community donations and fundraising events. While these funds typically cover operational expenses, replacing the totaled vehicle will require a significant fundraising effort.

"The Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad is a valuable resource for Central Kansas," said Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan. "In addition to local incidents, they have responded to requests for assistance outside of Saline County. They maintain a team of rescue divers, search teams including K-9s, and reserve deputies. I highly encourage donations to the organization, and they are always looking for volunteers."
