Saline County Man's Quick Thinking Keeps Him from Falling for Scam

Sound thinking on the part of an elderly Saline County resident keeps him from falling for the latest scam.

The Sheriff's Office says that an 80-year-old rural Saline County man received a letter in the mail, advising that he was an heir to an $11.55M life insurance policy. Someone with the same last name as him was the owner of the policy, and had passed away. The victim needed to contact the office in Canada, and give more information on themselves, including banking numbers. Upon this completion, 90% of the money would be deposited into the victim's account, with 10% being kept as a surcharge.

The victim recognized that this was a scam, and called the Sheriff's Office. The letter was poorly written with obvious grammatical errors. The "lawfirm" also had a gmail address. The SO called the number provided in the letter and talked to someone with a heavy foreign accent, who would not identify themselves.
