Saline County Department of Senior Services Offers Opportunities for Healthy Aging

Saline County Department of Senior Services is dedicated to promoting healthful aging and is seeking volunteers to support its mission. By joining their team, you can make a significant difference in the lives of seniors in our community. They are specifically looking for volunteers to assist in the dining room during lunchtime and to deliver Meals On Wheels to homebound individuals. Volunteer opportunities are available three to five times every sixth week during lunchtime. If you are interested, please contact the Center at 785-827-9818 for more information.

In addition to volunteer opportunities, the Senior Center offers various free health services for the community. Accessible Home Health provides free blood pressure checks on the first and third Thursdays of each month in the first-floor Dining Room at 11 am. Salina Family Healthcare offers free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, flu shots, and COVID-19 booster shots, on the second Tuesday of every month in the same location.

For seniors in need of medical foot care, Hermes Healthcare, Inc provides comprehensive services, including nail care and treatment for foot problems such as abscesses, abrasions, calluses, corns, ulcers, and fungal cultures. They accept various insurance plans, including Medicare/Medicaid. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 316-260-4110. Hermes Healthcare holds sessions every 9 weeks.

The Senior Center also offers grief support services through Interim Healthcare. A Grief Support Group is held on the third Tuesday of each month at 1 pm, led by Debbie Holmes, LMSW. All individuals are welcome to attend. For more information, please contact Interim Healthcare at 785-452-3800.

Stay active and fit with the Senior Fitness Class held on Mondays at 10 am. Led by experienced fitness leader Brooke Wilcox from Accessible Home Health, this class is suitable for all fitness levels. Participants engage in strength, balance, and flexibility exercises using light hand weights, elastic bands, and exercise balls. Many participants continue to practice what they have learned in the class by meeting independently on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 am. To register, please visit the first-floor Reception Desk. A $3 room-use fee per month is requested.

For those interested in yoga stretching, a group gathers in the third-floor Fitness Room every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 am. This Yoga Stretching for Seniors class provides a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. To register, please visit the first-floor Reception Desk. A $3 room-use fee per month is requested.

The Salina Senior Center is also known for its delightful lunchtime experience. Lunches are served on weekdays from 11:15 am to 1:15 pm. The cost is $4 for seniors on the subsidized program (ages 60 and above), $6 for seniors (ages 60 and above) not on the subsidized program, and $7 for all others. All ages are welcome to enjoy a nutritious meal at the Center. Carryout meals are also available by placing an order at 785-827-9818.

Join the Senior Center for a range of engaging activities. The second-floor Lightfoot Billiard Parlor offers free pool games for enthusiasts. Painting classes by Instructor Barb Culley are held every Monday and Tuesday. A writing group meets every Thursday to share and enhance writing skills. The Piece Makers, a group working on projects for community organizations, meets on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Woodcarvers gather on Fridays to practice their craft. Additionally, Bingo sessions are sponsored by Lincoln Park Manor Home Health on the fourth Wednesday of each month, by Interim Home Health on the first Wednesday of each month, and a senior-sponsored Super Bingo takes place on the third Thursday of each month.
