Salina Teacher Faces Contract Termination After Middle School Weight Room Incident, USD 305 Confirms

The incident at South Middle School on September 6, 2024, involving a 13-year-old student and a 39-year-old teacher, has seen significant developments. The Salina Public Schools Board of Education has taken initial steps toward terminating the teacher's contract, but the teacher has the right to request a hearing before final action is taken at an upcoming USD 305 Board of Education meeting. This information was provided by Jennifer Camien, Communications Director for USD 305.

The Salina Police Department concluded its investigation into the incident, which occurred while the student was bench pressing in the school's weight room. After the exercise, the teacher allegedly sat on the student, leading to the student losing consciousness and sustaining a head injury after rolling off the bench.

Following the investigation, the case was sent to the Salina Municipal Court, which asked the Saline County Attorney’s Office to review it for possible prosecution. However, the County Attorney declined to press charges, citing witness accounts that characterized the incident as playful, which did not meet the legal criteria for criminal intent.
