SALINA, KS β An inquiry into an incident involving an injured dog has prompted official requests for information from both the Salina Animal Shelter and the Salina Police Department, after local sources reported that a dog was dragged and later euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.
On Monday, June 23, at 6:00 p.m., an email was sent to Monique Hawley, Salina Animal Services Manager, inquiring whether the shelter had received a dog that had been dragged, and if the animal had to be humanely euthanized. Hawley replied at 6:16 p.m., stating she was still at work and that the case was ongoing. No further comment was given at that time.
The following day, Tuesday, June 24, at 2:19 p.m., a follow-up email asked whether more information could now be shared, specifically asking if the dog was a Doberman and whether the Salina Police Department was the appropriate point of contact for public details. At 2:52 p.m., Hawley responded, directing all inquiries to SPD and noting that they were the proper agency to provide information on the case.
At 3:01 p.m., a formal request for information was sent to the Salina Police Department. The request sought confirmation of the incident details, including whether a dog had been dragged in the parking lot of the city/county building, whether the animal had to be euthanized at the shelter, and whether an arrest had been made.
UPDATE:
Captain James Feldman of the Salina Police Department provided the following statement:
βOfficers who responded to the scene determined through contact with the owner and witnesses the leash of the dog unknowingly became entangled behind the vehicle. The owner/driver did not become aware of the situation until other drivers flagged them down. The animal shelter did respond and collect the dog, which needed to be euthanized. There are no charges, this was a tragic accident.β
