UPDATE: 2 Teens with Requested Arson Charges After String of Fires in 24 Hours
UPDATE: Captain Forrester says that all six alleged fires occurred all fires on Friday, April 21.
The first alleged fire was at 12:37 am, in Sunset Park. A dispatch was sent out for a grass fire. When officers arrived, they allegedly observed a grass fire. SFD extinguished the fire on the west side of the park, and damage was estimated at $500.
At around the same time, another dispatch went out for a grass fire at Indian Rock Park. Officers allegedly located the grass fire on the north side of the park. SFD extinguished it, and damage was estimated at $500.
At 2 am, a dispatch was received for a brush fire at Sunset Park. Officers arrived to an alleged fire on the west side of the park, different from the fire earlier in the night. This damage was also estimated at $500.
At 2:45 am, officers were sent to Taco Bell, 2315 S 9th, for an alleged dumpster on fire. Damage was estimated at $100.
Later on the same day, at 10:59 pm, officers were sent to Sunset Park, where cardboard was allegedly set on fire with a bush, on the south side of the park. Damage again was estimated at $500.
At 11:25 pm, officers were dispatched again to Indian Rock Park, to the circle drive on top of the park. Grass was allegedly burning, and damage was estimated at $500.
While at this call, the 17-year-old male reporting party allegedly advised that he entinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher. The 17-year-old was allegedly with a 13-year-old male, both from Salina. Through the investigation, the two teens were allegedly determined to be responsible for the fires. Both teens have the requested charges of six counts of arson.
ORIGINAL: Just before 11 pm on Friday, April 21, Salina Fire was dispatched to Sunset Park for a possible bush on fire. Reports indicated that this was on the south side of the park, by the ball field. Salina311 will have more information as it becomes available.
