A petition led by Salinans Against BSL to lift Salina’s ban on pit bulls has successfully collected just over 1,800 signatures, surpassing the required 1,400, according to Tyler Sartain, one of the initiative’s leaders. Sartain told Salina311 that although they have exceeded the legal threshold, the review process could still be extensive.
"We’ve gathered more than enough signatures, but they’ll definitely be verifying names to ensure all signatures are legitimate," Sartain explained.
Despite this, Sartain remains hopeful that the petition will move forward to the Salina City Commission. He noted, "The Salina City Commission has previously stated they will not vote directly to lift the ban. Instead, the matter would be put to a public vote."
"Hopefully, it’ll be good enough to go before the commission, and the public can decide," Sartain added, noting that it could take months before a special election is scheduled.
The petition represents a significant step in bringing the issue to the broader community for consideration.
