KWU Softball Swept by Saint Mary

Kansas Wesleyan Softball was swept in Saturday's doubleheader against the Saint Mary Spires. USM won the first game 4-1 and the second 10-3.

The first game was a pitcher's battle that the Coyotes broke through first in the fourth inning. Hailey Summers singled followed by a double by Jocelyn Alcala. Summers would then score on a throwing error on the play to put the Coyotes up 1-0.

Saint Mary got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but left the runner stranded at first.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Saint Mary scored four runs. A walk, a hit batter and an error to start the inning loaded the bases for the Spires. After two strikeouts, a hit batter brought in a run, and a 2-run single followed by another run scoring hit to put the Spires up.

Four different players had hits for the Coyotes. Mirando Fogal took the loss allowing four unearned runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in an inning. Starter Caitlyn Collier went five innings, holding Saint Mary to one hit and no runs with two walks and two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the first as Sydnee Fordham doubled, then went to third on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error by the catcher on the play.

Saint Mary strung together six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.

The Spires added two more on a squeeze bunt and a double in the second.

In the third, the Coyotes got a pair of runs across as Jenna Soule doubled and Summers singled, setting up a sacrifice fly by Fordham and Eliza Flores drove in the second run of the frame with a hit.

The Spires added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to claim the win.

Fordham had two of Wesleyan's seven hits in the game. Jewell Henry took the loss allowing six runs on six hits without recording an out in the first. Halley Asbury went the rest of the way allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.

Wesleyan hosts Tabor on Wednesday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Salina South High School.
