Press Release from Captain James Feldman – Update on the Passing of K-9 Officer Tyrann
The Salina Police Department would like to address recent social media posts concerning the tragic death of K-9 Officer Tyrann, which contain false information. In an effort to remain transparent, the department issued a preliminary release shortly after the incident, even before a thorough investigation was completed.
Officers were in the area for a recruiting advertisement when K-9 Officer Tyrann was allowed out of the vehicle by his handler to relieve himself. This was a familiar location for both Tyrann and his handler, having been used frequently for training. Tyrann went around a parked vehicle, and when his handler went to check on him, the tragedy was discovered.
Contrary to rumors, Tyrann was never placed or asked to get on a ledge. It is possible that Tyrann, being highly trained but still a dog, may have heard noise from a parade below and jumped over the wall in an attempt to investigate.
Tyrann was a respected and beloved member of the Salina Police Department. No member of this department would ever place him in a needlessly dangerous position. His loss has deeply affected the department and the community he served with honor every day.
