Record-breaking early registrations are fueling excitement for the ninth-annual Fe for a Cure Race/Walk, set for Saturday, September 21, in support of patients at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center. Organizers are aiming to surpass 1,000 participants on race day.
This year’s event features a couple of changes designed to increase participation, including the addition of a 1-mile walking and running event alongside the traditional 5K and an earlier start time of 8 a.m., making it easier for families to participate before other Saturday activities.
“These changes were based on feedback from last year,” said Marla McElderry, executive director of the Salina Regional Health Foundation. “The 1-mile option encourages people who may have hesitated about completing a full 5K, and the earlier start time accommodates busy schedules. Registrations typically surge in the final week leading up to the race.”
Registration is $25 for ages 12 and older, and $10 for those 11 and younger, with all registrants receiving a commemorative t-shirt. Cancer survivors will receive specially designated shirts. Those unable to attend can register as “Couch Potatoes” to receive a t-shirt and support the cause.
Race-day registration opens at 6 a.m., with early packet pickup available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, September 20 at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center.
Both the 1-mile and USATF-certified 5K events start and finish at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center on Santa Fe Avenue. The 1-mile event will head north on Santa Fe to a turnaround near the Stiefel Theatre, while the 5K course runs through downtown Salina, Oakdale Park, and Kenwood Park.
All entry fees will directly benefit patients undergoing treatment at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center, supporting programs such as clinical trial access, meal programs, transportation assistance, and more.
A special cancer survivor recognition will be held at 7:15 a.m. on race day, followed by a welcome and race announcements. Post-race festivities include breakfast sandwiches, refreshments, music, and medal presentations.
