City of Salina Continues Storm Cleanup Efforts

The City of Salina is pressing forward with its extensive storm cleanup efforts following the severe weather event that recently struck the area. As of the August 12, 2024, City Commission meeting, city officials reported significant progress in clearing debris, but emphasized that the work is far from complete and that federal emergency aid may be necessary to fully recover.

Director of Public Works Jim Teutsch provided an update on the cleanup process, noting that over 4,200 loads of debris, totaling approximately 3,500 tons, have already been transported to the landfill. Six dedicated crews, each consisting of seven to eight workers, are operating across six zones in the city, working tirelessly to clear downed trees, branches, and other storm debris. Despite these efforts, only about 47.5% of the cleanup has been completed.

Teutsch highlighted the exceptional community response, with residents actively participating in the cleanup by neatly stacking debris on curbs, making it easier for city crews to collect. The city has also rented additional equipment to expedite the process, though Teutsch acknowledged that the timeline for completion remains uncertain.

One of the major challenges facing the city is the potential loss of a county-owned wheel loader, a critical piece of equipment for the cleanup effort. The city is considering leasing an additional wheel loader to ensure the work continues without interruption. A new city-owned wheel loader is expected to arrive later this week, which should help maintain the momentum of the cleanup.

During the meeting, the commission discussed the ongoing disaster declaration process, which involves coordination between local, state, and federal agencies. The city is currently awaiting news on whether a Federal Emergency declaration will be issued, which would unlock federal aid to assist with the recovery efforts. Such aid could be crucial in covering the costs of the extensive cleanup, as well as in addressing any long-term damage caused by the storm.

City officials and commissioners expressed gratitude to the Salina community for their patience and cooperation during this challenging time. As the city continues its cleanup efforts, the potential for federal assistance remains a key factor in ensuring that Salina can fully recover from the storm and restore normalcy for its residents.
