"Beyond the City Limits" typically refers to areas outside the defined boundaries of a city (Salina) or urban area. These regions can vary widely in characteristics such as population density, infrastructure, and economic activities compared to urban centers. They often include rural areas, and sometimes wilderness or agricultural zones. Exploring beyond the city limits can provide contrasting perspectives on lifestyle, environment, and community dynamics compared to city life.
LET'S GO on a little road trip around Saline County! 🚗
9th Stop:
KIPP, KS

Kipp is located southeast of Salina along Schilling Road between Whitmore Road and Kipp Road, next to an abandoned railroad line, that has been totally removed, with just a path remaining. As of the 2022 census, the population was 88. A current resident stated they believe the population hovers around 50 people.

The red brick shown on the left side of the building was the high school. It is now attached to the manufacturing facility.

The non-working elevator sits next to an abandoned railroad line, that has been totally removed, with just a path remaining. The elevator is privately owned.

What once functioned as the church is now a private residence. The owner maintained the stain glass windows and the bell tower. Both tell tales signs of days gone by.

Kipp schools were closed through school unification following the 1963-1964 school year. Students now attend Southeast of Saline, located 4 miles west of Gypsum. Prior to Kipp closing, the Kipp Orioles won the Kansas State High School class B baseball championship in 1949. Both the high school and the grade school buildings in Kipp are used, but not for educational purposes.
Just as the high school is a thing of the past, the post office that was opened in 1890, is no longer there. It was in operation up until 1957, when it was discontinued. A concrete slab is all that remains where the building for the bank once stood.

Michael and Allie Kaiser, with their children: Olivia, Kaiden and Delilah, moved to Kipp three years ago. The family moved from Salina, into the building that once was the grade school. The children attend Southeast of Saline, located a few miles away from Kipp.

Referred to as the Solomon Township Hall
Kipp is a prime location for families looking to attend Southeast of Saline School District. Its proximity offers both convenience and access to quality education in a small community. With Gypsum and Salina being a short distance away, all your necessities can be acquired easily. Sometimes, less is better. Just ask the residents of these small communities! The towns may be small in stature, but they are big at heart.
